Tham Pui San, a volunteer of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, is an avid artist who expresses his passion for nature through his art work.

Pui San welcomes artists of all ages or anyone who wants to learn. His objective is to encourage creativity while enjoying nature at the same time. Bring along your favourite drawing or painting supplies and enjoy learning different drawing techniques at Sungei Buloh.

Held in conjunction with the "Portraits of Nature" exhibition are a series of interesting and enriching talks/workshops on nature appreciation and nature photography by Meng Foo.

Meng Foo has been photographing since he was fifteen years old. At sixteen, he won the Best Print (Student Section) for Asian Photographic Salon competition and his works were exhibited in the Singapore National Museum and the National University of Singapore. Most recently his works were featured in Asian Geographic, Silverlining, Wave and One magazine. He has been giving seminars and workshops on photography and digital photoshop technique. He has keen interest in shooting theatrical performances, cityscape and Arthropods. Some of his works have been collected in Singapore and abroad. He was trained as an architect and urban designer, travelled extensively in Southeast Asia. He also loves to write, paint, design and think. He put his thoughts of 30 years on photography in the book: 100 ways to Photography. He continues to explore the world through photography, sketching, paintings, thinking and writing.

Free guided nature walk along the Mangrove boardwalk under shady mangrove trees. Spot mudskippers, crabs and other marine life, learn about our mangroves, enjoy views of the Johor straits.

Suitable for young children.

Registration is not required for small walk-in groups. But each walk is limited to 15 persons per guide and is on a first-come -first-served basis. The walks are weather permitting and may merge with other activities at the Reserve. Those coming with large groups are advised to pre-register.

HortPark's Butterfly Garden is a 150-sqm landscaped theme garden comprising an enclosure and an outdoor garden. Providing a visual feast of tropical plants and nearly 20 species of native butterflies, the Butterfly Garden enables visitors to learn about the different stages of metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar into butterfly. Within the enclosure, visitors are greeted with an up close and personal encounter with these flying jewels and can observe how pupae emerge into adult butterflies before taking their maiden flight.

The Butterfly Garden also serves as an experimental garden for National Parks Board to work on a Butterfly Species Recovery Programme to research on suitable nectar and host plants for breeding a variety of butterfly species, including locally extinct species such as Clipper (Parthenos sylvia) and Common Sergeant (Athyma perius).

Get up close and personal with the flying jewels, and learn their different stages of metamorphosis from egg to caterpillar into butterfly. Observe how pupae emerge into adult butterflies before taking their maiden flight within HortPark's Butterfly Garden.

This walk is free and is held every last Saturday of the month.

Join us for this monthly mission to rescue and study the Mangrove Horseshoe Crab (HSC). We have also started an ongoing HSC Training & Accreditation Programme for anyone keen to be a qualified HSC R&Rer. 19 Feb (Sun): Chek Jawa Walk with Cicada Tree Eco Place

We go on the extensive boardwalk at Chek Jawa on Pulau Ubin. Here we shall see a diversity of unique flora and fauna. At low tide, exposed seaweeds used to be collected by locals to feed their pigs. From the mangroves, Attap Palm leaves were harvested for thatching while durable Nibong Palm trunks were used to build kelongs. The shallow sea here was also a rich hunting ground. Many natural resources were depended upon, and used in sustainable ways by the kampong folk who lived at Chek Jawa.

Note: This activity will be on the boardwalk, walking on mudflats is not allowed.

From the meeting place, a hired bus will ferry us to our destination. We begin with a pleasant stroll along a countryside road to the Kranji Marshes where we will continue our walk along the PUB bund. The marsh is designated by URA as a Nature Park and is currently adopted by NSS under the PUB's ABC Waters Programme. Birding highlights here include the Red-wattled Lapwing, Purple Swamphen, Rusty-breasted Cuckoo, White-browed Crake, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Grey-headed Fish Eagle and more.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is the largest surviving primary rainforest in Singapore. Come and join us on a fascinating journey of discovery to learn more about the natural wonders of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and why we should protect and conserve its complex ecosystem and diversity.

At this walk, the guide will introduce you to the common native flora and fauna found in the primary rainforest.

This guided walk is suitable for families with children and groups of not more than 5. Along a slightly undulating natural path, the trail is not accessible to prams and wheelchairs.

Explore the beauty and diversity of orchids in the National Orchid Garden, Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Since 1859, orchids have been closely associated with the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The products of the Gardens' orchid breeding programme, which began in 1928, deserve a place where they can be displayed in their full splendour. The very design of these orchids is, one could say, 'hand-crafted' by the Gardens' horticultural staff, dedicated to bringing out the finest in any hybrid cross.

Over 1000 species and 2,000 hybrids are now found in the Gardens' collection, with about 600 species and hybrids on display. Every year, more vibrant and enduring hybrids are added on. So that all may admire and enjoy their diversity, richness and beauty, the National Orchid Garden now offers a permanent showcase, the largest display of tropical orchids in the world.

This walk is conducted by the volunteers of the Singapore Botanic Gardens and is held every third Saturday of the month.

Butterfly host and nectar plants have been planted along and adjacent to Orchard Road to form a 4 km stretch known as the Butterfly Trail @ Orchard. Here, you can enjoy the sight of up to 50 butterfly species. The shortened walk starts at the butterfly garden in Stamford Green (next to the National Museum), passing through the Singapore Management University, Dhoby Ghaut Green, Istana Park, Penang Road Open Space and ending at the rooftop garden in Orchard Central.

We have the privilege of Butterfly Interest Group Chairperson Gan Cheong Weei personally guiding us. Please register your children (4 to 12 years old) with Gloria at gloria_seow@yahoo.com, stating their names and ages, if they are NSS members or not, if you need us to loan you a pair of binoculars or not, and let us have your mobile number. This walk starts at the entrance of Dairy Farm Road. We go onto the path, passing by secondary forests and old fruit orchards, ending at the Singapore Quarry to view the freshwater wetland ecosystem here which is ringed by the rainforested cliffs of Bukit Timah Hill.

Kid participants will get to do a wildlife survey and study of the biodiversity found here.

Held in conjunction with the "Portraits of Nature" exhibition are a series of interesting and enriching talks/workshops on nature appreciation and nature photography by Meng Foo.

Meng Foo has been photographing since he was fifteen years old. At sixteen, he won the Best Print (Student Section) for Asian Photographic Salon competition and his works were exhibited in the Singapore National Museum and the National University of Singapore. Most recently his works were featured in Asian Geographic, Silverlining, Wave and One magazine. He has been giving seminars and workshops on photography and digital photoshop technique. He has keen interest in shooting theatrical performances, cityscape and Arthropods. Some of his works have been collected in Singapore and abroad. He was trained as an architect and urban designer, travelled extensively in Southeast Asia. He also loves to write, paint, design and think. He put his thoughts of 30 years on photography in the book: 100 ways to Photography. He continues to explore the world through photography, sketching, paintings, thinking and writing.

The World Wetlands Day theme for 2012 is Wetlands and Tourism. Wetland tourism has benefits for people and wildlife in areas such as stronger economies, healthy people, quality of life and thriving ecosystems.

It is worth noting that tourism is only one of the services that wetlands deliver. Ensuring well-managed tourism practices in and around wetlands and educating visitors on the value of wetlands contributes to the health of the world's wetlands and the long-term benefits that wetlands provide to people, wildlife, economics, and biodiversity.

Join us at SBWR for a day of discovery about the rich fauna and flora of Singapore’s only protect wetland reserve.

For example, wood from trees can be made into beautiful furniture for our homes. Join us for this programme where you can discover how plants are useful to us. You can also make participate in a hands-on activity by using plants to create your own masterpiece!

Jiahui is a manager from the National Parks Board. She enjoys gardening and is passionate about spreading her love for green and nature to the public, to let them appreciate the wonderful world of plants.

The Dairy Farm sector of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is not only known for its historical value, it is also rich in forest birds and butterfly species. Commonly encountered birds here include Thick-billed Pigeon, Blue-winged Leafbird and the Abbott's Babbler. Some of the shyer forest butterflies like the Archduke, Horsfield's Baron and Malay Lacewing can also be expected here, especially along the trails. Join Anuj (Butterfly Interest Group) and Ding Li (Bird Group) as they explore this tranquil patch of woods and introduce some of its denizens, and why they are important to forest ecology. From the meeting place, a hired bus will ferry us to our destination. We begin with a pleasant stroll along a countryside road to the Kranji Marshes where we will continue our walk along the PUB bund. The marsh is designated by URA as a Nature Park and is currently adopted by NSS under the PUB's ABC Waters Programme. Birding highlights here include the Red-wattled Lapwing, Purple Swamphen, Rusty-breasted Cuckoo, White-browed Crake, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Grey-headed Fish Eagle and more.

This walk is open to the public. Click on the ‘ATTEND’ button to register by 16 Jan. A registration form will then be emailed to you. Max: 20 pax.

The Istana grounds are open to the public in celebration of Lunar New Year.

There will be a variety of performances on the grounds during the Open House. Among the performers will be the brass bands from the East Spring Secondary School and Yuying Secondary School. There will also be lion and dragon dances as well as martial arts performances by the People's Association.

The Singapore Zoo will also put up an exhibit of green iguanas and snakes.

View the Istana gardens while a variety of performances on the grounds provide entertainment. You may also have the chance to have your photos taken with the President and First Lady when they come by to greet visitors.

Selected function rooms with displays of gifts presented to the President and Prime Minister by foreign dignitaries can be viewed for a fee of $2. All proceeds from entrance fees and the sale of Istana souvenirs will be donated to charity.

Time: 8.30am - 6pm
Venue: Entrance to the grounds is via the main gate at Orchard Road.
Charges: Admission to the Istana grounds is free for Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents. Others, including foreign visitors, are charged an entrance fee of $1 per person.

Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world's shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador.

For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it turned into was a beautiful and dangerous life journey into the balance of life on earth. Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas.

NUS PEACE (People Ending Animal Cruelty & Exploitation), an animal welfare student group, has teamed up with Project: FIN to bring to everyone the screening of Sharkwater. As a prelude to the upcoming Lunar New Year festivities, Project: FIN, a marine conservation non-profit group, typically steps up education efforts in our best attempts to curb the cruel practice of consuming shark's fin. As part of the roadshow, we intend to conduct samplings of mock shark's fin soup to students to emphasize the fact that shark fins have no taste, and that the same soup can be made using alternatives. So do come down to know more, get involved and take a stand in this glorious New Year!

Booth on the issue will be up all day 18 Jan (Wed) and 19 Jan (Thu) at the NUS Central Library Walkway.

Join the Nature Society (Singapore) for a birdwatching walk around this special corner of Singapore and find out for yourself why it is worth conserving this historical and natural treasure trove! This walk is free of charge.

The Bukit Brown area is about 233 hectares in extent, bordered by Lornie Road, Lower Thomson Road and the Pan-Island Expressway. It lies just to the south of the Central Catchment Forest, being separated from it by Lornie Road and includes one of Singapore's oldest Chinese cemetery. With 100,000 graves, Bukit Brown is also one of the largest Chinese cemeteries outside of China.

The area is generally undulating, consisting of hillocks and small valleys.

"Revisiting History, Embracing Nature"
Join us as we guide you along The Fort Canning Spice Trail and discover the fascinating world of spices.

This trail sits on the site of Singapore’s first experimental and botanical garden. A small replica of the 19ha garden, it now has a collection of more than a hundred species of plants - spice, herbs, medicinal, economical and ornamentals. Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) and Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) trees, which were planted extensively in the first garden, can be found there as well.

Other attractions along this trail also includes the Archaeological Dig, which showcases the actual excavation site, the only such exhibition in modern Singapore, and Keramat, believed to be a tomb of Singapore’s last king, Sultan Iskandar Syah.

Whether it is botanical or historical, learning about our history is just a walk in the park.

Walk is moderately easy but will involve walking up slopes and steps so do come dressed comfortably. The tour lasts two and a half hours. This is held every third Saturday of the month.

You may also opt for the Heritage on the Hill tour, which will bring you around the park and discover the events that have changed and shaped the face of Fort Canning over the years.

Whales and dolphins have captured the imagination of people all over the world. They have come to symbolize not only an alien form of intelligence, but a sense of ultimate freedom in their marine environment and a camaraderie among their herd mates that we envy and admire.

A Fall from Freedom is the first film to expose the long and sordid history of the captive whale and dolphin business: a history that continues to this day. The illegal capture and transport of killer whales, the thousands of dolphins that are killed in order to provide marine parks and aquariums with replacement animals, and the ability of these facilities to miseducate the public about these animals.

The scenic Lorong Halus Wetland was opened in March 2011 to help purify run-offs from this old rubbish landfill. Get to meet Bird Group Chairperson Alan Owyong as he takes us on a sight and sound tour of the thriving bird life found here. For years, Little Grebes and Common Moorhens have made their home at Halus. We might spot attractive grassland birds such as Yellow-bellied Prinias, Munias, Baya Weavers and Long-tailed Shrikes.

Please register your children (4 to 12 years old) with Gloria Seow at gloria_seow@yahoo.com, stating their names and ages, if they are NSS members or not, and let us have your mobile number. From the meeting place, a hired bus will ferry us to our destination. We begin with a pleasant stroll along a countryside road to the Kranji Marshes where we will continue our walk along the PUB bund. The marsh is designated by URA as a Nature Park and is currently adopted by NSS under the PUB's ABC Waters Programme. Birding highlights here include the Red-wattled Lapwing, Purple Swamphen, Rusty-breasted Cuckoo, White-browed Crake, Changeable Hawk Eagle, Grey-headed Fish Eagle and more.

This one day camp encompasses a series of fun-filled and educational indoor and outdoor learning of the wetlands and nature conservation issues through worksheets, nature walks and hands-on activities. Children will earn a stamp for every completed activity, and a full collection of stamps will earn them a series of cloth badges.

Limited to 40 children between the age of 6-10 years old. Registration is required.

Cost: Each participant needs to purchase a young naturalist passport from the Visitor Services Counter at 50 cents. Seagrass meadows are one of the most productive ecosystems on earth, but no one knows what they are! Are they algae? Are they seaweed? Can they be eaten? Is it true you can find mermaids frolicking in seagrass meadows?

Marine biologist Siti M. Yaakub will teach us about these underwater forests, what makes them tick and why everyone should hug a seagrass today!

Siti read marine biology as an undergraduate at James Cook University where she dabbled in various aspects of the marine sciences from geology to genetics. Her first encounter with seagrasses started in a marine botany class in second year and when she went back to Singapore during her semester break, she started surveying seagrasses in Singapore just for giggles. Little did she realise that brief dalliances turn into lifelong obsessions – seagrass continued to be a feature when she worked as a Senior Biodiversity Officer with NParks and now as a graduate student at the National University of Singapore. She has since accepted her fate as a seagrass-nerd-extraodinaire and strongly advocates that everyone should hug a seagrass today.

Our nature-loving guides from The Green Volunteers will walk you through this public park that has undergone a series of historical transformation through the centuries. Although much of the original vegetation has disappeared due to these changes, active greening efforts have converted this once formidable fort into an idyllic respite from the hustle and bustle of city life amidst lush and magnificent trees. Meet the Towering Kapok, Flaky Gelam, Gnarled Madras Thorn and many more.

Learn how plants and animals have co-existed and to a certain extent become co-dependant on one another for survival. Immerse yourself in the sounds of nature orchestrated by chirping birds and shrilling cicadas as you walk along the trail.

In a vastly developed urban jungle, Fort Canning offers that unique pocket of biodiversity to appreciate the greenery within our vibrant city.

This is a free public outreach programme in the park.

Join us for this monthly mission to rescue and study the Mangrove Horseshoe Crab (HSC). We have also started an ongoing HSC Training & Accreditation Programme for anyone keen to be a qualified HSC R&Rer. We recommend that you bring a cap, shoes/booties, sun block, repellent, cutter (for HSC rescue) and camera. Washing facilities available.
