27 Jan (Sun): Coastal Clean-up at Kranji Mudflats

Open to the Public - Registration Needed

Join us in cleaning up Kranji Mudflats to benefit the wildlife that thrives there. Designated an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area, this stretch of coastline is a key habitat for horseshoe crabs and an important feeding site for wading birds.

27 Jan (Sun): Butterfly Walk at Singapore Botanic Gardens

For Nature Society (Singapore) Members Only

Inscribed as the first and only Tropical Botanic Garden on UNESCO's World Heritage list, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is home to a rich variety of tropical trees, shrubs and vines. We shall explore primarily the Herb Garden and also the edge of the Eco Garden to look for a variety of butterfly species. Past visits have yielded sightings of the Rustic, oft thought as a forest species. But with the presence of its host plant in the garden, the Rustic is fairly easily seen here. Other commonly encountered butterflies include the Leopard, Plain Tiger, Common Mormon, Cycad Blue, Common Grass Yellow and Common Palmfly. Less common ones include our National Butterfly the Common Rose and the Hoary Palmer.

26 Jan (Sat): Free Pasir Ris Mangrove boardwalk tour with the Naked Hermit Crabs

In celebrating of World Wetlands Day and specially for kids and families, explore Pasir Ris mangroves with volunteer nature guides from the Naked Hermit Crabs on this FREE guided tour of the boardwalk!

During our evening stroll through this interesting but often overlooked mangrove, we are sure to see lots of crazy tree climbing crabs, delightful giant mudskippers and cool monitor lizards. Pasir Ris is also one of the few places where nesting herons are easily observed. And as the sun sets, we might spot some nocturnal animals like watersnakes. If we're lucky, we may catch a glimpse of the rare Mangrove pitta or the family of otters that have been seen here!

26 Jan (Sat): Nature Appreciation Walk at Windsor Nature Park

Ideally situated at the perimeter of Central Catchment Nature Reserve, the 75-hectare Windsor Nature Park is the gateway to the rich biodiversity of the largest nature reserve in Singapore. The nature park was developed as a green buffer to help reduce visitorship pressures and man-made disturbances currently experienced by the nature reserve

Through this guided walk, you will gain a greater appreciation of Singapore’s rich natural heritage and the need to protect it for future generations. Come join us and discover the importance of Windsor Nature Park as a buffer to the Central Catchment Nature Reserve.

26 Jan (Sat): Pasir Ris Park Sculpture Walk

In conjunction with the World Wetlands Day 2019, join artists from the Sculpture Society (Singapore) for a walk in nature from a different perspective as they share more about the various wood sculptures exhibited around Pasir Ris Park.

These nature-inspired artworks are created by experienced wood sculpting artists during the Wood Symposium from 16 to 20 January 2019. In this multi-sensory experience, you will learn more and appreciate the art of wood carving, all while enjoying the cooling walk under the canopy, and being amongst the diverse flora and fauna.

26 Jan (Sat): A walk with your neighbours - the macaques of Bukit Timah

The long-tailed macaques are the most conspicuous animals at Bukit Timah. Although commonly seen, they are very misunderstood. Few seeing them realise anything about the social world these monkeys live in. They have kin networks, power struggles, friends, foes, and an otherwise complex social network. In many ways, they provide a mirror of our own sociality.

If you would like to learn more about your community and the interesting world of your neighbouring macaques at Macritchie, please join our free walk, led by experts from the Jane Goodall Institute Singapore.

Suitable for adults and children above 8 years.

26 Jan (Sat): Art and Ecology – Fun Prints with Marine Debris

Join us to explore Singapore’s marine biodiversity through art and science! As part of “Beneath tide, Running forest”, exhibition curator Dr. Wang Ruobing is conducting a workshop where children can create artworks through printmaking. Get ready for a hands-on session in giving marine litter a new lease of life through art, while learning about our natural heritage!

Held in conjunction with International Year of the Reef 2018, the workshop will include a guided exhibition tour by the curator and an introduction to marine biodiversity by NParks. All materials are provided and participants will be able to bring home their artwork.

About the curator: Dr. Wang Ruobing is an artist, curator and researcher based in Singapore. She lectures in McNally School of Fine Art at Lasalle College of the Arts, and had received her Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford. She was previously a curator at National Gallery Singapore. Her research concentrates on environment, identity, hybridity, and transcultural discourses with a special focus on the contemporary art in China and Southeast Asia. In her art practices, Ruobing often uses everyday objects to challenge ways of seeing and comment on the process of knowledge acquisition.
