He willl talk about Citi's microfinance programs, financial education seminars and how it plans to tackle climate change. 29 Oct (Wed): MAD lesson on Frogs & Toads

Singapore has 25 species of frogs and toads, 19 of which live in our forests. If our forest is degraded due to un-natural climate change, we may easily lose some of our amphibian species.

Kids will learn about the diversity of frogs and toads in Singapore, the differences between frogs and toads, learn about their ecology —- their life cycle, where they live, what they eat, what may eat them. Get to know how to create amphibian habitats that will attract native frogs and toads to breed!

This MAD lesson will also include information about global warming and our carbon footprint and kids will leave the lesson with a pledge to do easy eco-actions daily in their lives so as to be part of the solution to protect our environment and wild habitats.

29 Oct (Wed): “Pricing” the Environment: Case Studies on Climate Change and Turtle Conservation

Southeast Asia faces enormous environmental challenges possibly in the form of rising sea levels because of climate change, and also a degradation of its natural resources. These issues were dealt with in a special focus edition of the ASEAN Economic Bulletin (AEB) on “The Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources in Southeast Asia” (April 2008).

Managing environmental resources is not easy. Markets normally do a good job in dealing with scarcity — as things become scarcer, their prices increase, people consume less and producers invest more in producing them.

However, this does not happen when environmental goods and resources (global warming and sea level rises, climate fluctuations, nature conservation) became scarce, because few of them are bought and sold in markets. To overcome this shortcoming, economists and social scientists have devise methods to “price” environmental resources and to manage their impacts using markets.

Dr Herminia A Francisco will speak on “Adaptation to Climate Change: Needs and Opportunities in Southeast Asia”. The discussion will cover adaptation strategies and options for the impacts generated by climate change. Adaptation is important because sea-level rises and weather fluctuations will have widespread impacts on Southeast Asian economies and communities.

What are the adaptation options available to deal with climate change and sea-level rises? How costly are adaptation strategies?

Dr Orapan Nabangchang will focus on “Mobilizing Resources for Marine Turtle Conservation in Asia : A Cross-Country Perspective”. The presentation will discuss the results of a comparative study conducted in China, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam to assess the value placed by communities and individuals in marine turtle conservation.

Can communities in the region be entrusted to play an important role in financing conservation in the region? Or will reliance come from the international community as far as conservation issues are concerned?

25 Oct (Sat): Under the Billiard Room: Encountering the Raffles Hotel through its Animals

A talk by Dr Chee Lilian. In 1902, a tiger was allegedly shot under the Billiard Room of Singapore’s foremost colonial monument, the Raffles Hotel. This rare specimen has since refused to leave the premises, resurfacing intermittently in the hotel’s history as archive, anecdote, humour, satire, even translated into children’s stories.

Although Singapore is synonymously known as the ‘Lion City’, it was the tiger whose presence was more significantly felt in the island’s history. We find that the tiger narrative could open up new perspectives within the monument’s architectural history which are less abstract and culturally distant than we imagine.

5 Oct (Sat): Paws by the Beach - celebrating World Animal Day

World Animal Day is a day where animal lovers acknowledge and give thanks for the way in which animals enrich our lives. Also, we take a moment to think of all those animals that still need our help.

We are taking this chance to spread the messages of being kind to animals and being a responsible pet owner. These are very important issues because right now, we take in more than 800 unwanted animals (pets and strays) each month.

Star appearance!
Utt ( MTV VJ) will be making an appearance at our celebrations from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. He'll be on stage introducing three of our SPCA dogs that will be up for adoption, and will be talking about how to adopt a pet from us and save a life! Afterwards, you'll be able to buy an SPCA poster for $2 and Utt will autograph it especially for you.

Stand up for whale sharks

Whale sharks are majestic creatures, known as the gentle giants of the sea. Find out more about whale sharks and why the SPCA is against the importation and display of these creatures at the Integrated Resort on Sentosa.

Exhibition

A showcase of our work at the SPCA, including the sterilisation of pets, information about animal abuse and tips on responsible pet ownership.

Find an animal to adopt

Pictures of animals currently up for adoption at our shelter will be on display at our pet-care area. Open your hearts and give one of our furry friends a home.

National Parks Board

More than a thousand different animals reside on our tropical island and many of them can only be found in our nature reserves. As we celebrate World Animal Day, the National Parks Board would like to share with you how you can help protect our natural heritage so that the nature reserves can continue to be a safe haven for the animals. You can help in the following ways:
- think again before you release animals into the wild
- do not feed monkeys
- leave your pets at home when you visit nature reserves

In addition, National Parks will share information on their regular, free guided walks at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Central Catchment Nature Reserve.
