30 Jul (Sat): “Green Factory” Workshop

The National Geographic Store is collaborating with NParks to offer educational talks on local conservation, biodiversity and wildlife. There will also be an exhibition on the biodiversity in Singapore.

Forests are important to us as they are a source of food and material needs for mankind. Over the years, researchers have harvested ingredients for various medicines from research on plants found in the forests. Many of the items used in our everyday lives (eg, furniture) also come from the forests. If you want to know how important the forests in Singapore are, this workshop will show you a sampler of such daily items. Kids will also get a chance to participate in a short art and craft session at the end of the workshop.

Ms Jeanne Tan (Senior Outreach Officer) conducts this session.

For children 7-12 years. Maximum class size 20 persons.

30 Jul (Sat): Fort Canning Spice Trail guided walk

"Revisiting History, Embracing Nature"
Join us as we guide you along The Fort Canning Spice Trail and discover the fascinating world of spices.

This trail sits on the site of Singapore’s first experimental and botanical garden. A small replica of the 19ha garden, it now has a collection of more than a hundred species of plants - spice, herbs, medicinal, economical and ornamentals. Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans) and Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) trees, which were planted extensively in the first garden, can be found there as well.

Other attractions along this trail also includes the Archaeological Dig, which showcases the actual excavation site, the only such exhibition in modern Singapore and Keramat, believed to be a tomb of Singapore’s last king, Sultan Iskandar Syah.

Whether it is botanical or historical, learning about our history is just a walk in the park.

Walk is moderately easy but will involve walking up slopes and steps so do come dressed comfortably. The tour lasts two and a half hours. This walk is held every last Saturday of the month.

You may also opt for the Heritage on the Hill tour, which will bring you around the park and discover the events that have changed and shaped the face of Fort Canning over the years.

29 Jul (Fri): Talk on "The history and future of Singapore's Raffles Museum" by Prof Peter Ng

"From Whence We Came - The History & Future of Singapore’s Raffles Museum"

When Sir Stamford Raffles founded modern Singapore, he was acutely aware of the island’s position in the centre of tropical Southeast Asia. He mooted the idea of building a natural history museum for the island, which in 1874, was realised as the Raffles Museum and Library. It became known as an international heritage and research centre for all things Singaporean and Malayan, from archaeology to local culture, and of course, natural history. In fact, it built the foundation of biodiversity knowledge for both countries! Independence from the British saw the museum evolve. In 1965, the museum was renamed the National Museum and was tasked to focus on nation-building, as well as the arts and history of Singapore.

A few years later, the National University of Singapore took custody of the rich 150-year old natural history collections, eventually becoming the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research. Providence did two things. It protected the natural history heritage of Singapore and Malaysia. It also set the stage for its revival with S$46 million raised from the public to build a new natural history museum for Singapore. What is the future for natural history in Singapore and what will the new museum do? Some of these new visions will be shared with the public in this talk. Some other interesting ideas, such as the proposed acquisition of a family of three dinosaurs, will also be discussed.

The talk is free and all are welcome.

As places are limited, please register online.

More details of the talk on the RMBR News blog.

29 Jul (Fri): Talk on "Impact of Climate Change on Singapore's Biodiversity" by Yong Ding Li

Much information is now available on global climate change, including some frightening predictions which we do not look forward to. Temperatures and sea levels are expected to rise worldwide while many areas will receive less rain. What then will happen to the remnant biodiversity and natural vegetation of Singapore as well as South-east Asia? In this talk, we explore likely changes in Singapore's flora and fauna by the year 2030 and 2050, going by current predictions of expected environmental changes. Would our rainforests still remain as it is, given fragmentation and a different climate? Are our forest birds still going to be around? Which species will survive and what should we do now?

This talk is open to the public.

Such trees which have special botanical, historical or cultural significance have been officially endorsed as Heritage Trees. These trees are our steadfast, constant companions in a city that is renowned for its high pace of development and they help us identify with and stay rooted to the place we live in.

Come learn more about our Heritage Trees and where you can find them at a talk given by Mr Joey Gan, who manages the Heritage Tree Scheme at the National Parks Board (NParks).

Time: 3-4pm
Venue: Ang Mo Kio Public Library

16 Jul (Sat): Talk on "Singaporeans You’ve Never Met"

The National Geographic Store is collaborating with NParks to offer educational talks on local conservation, biodiversity and wildlife. There will also be an exhibition on the biodiversity in Singapore.

Singapore got forest meh? Where can you find animals in Singapore? In the zoo!
Sad but true, these are some of the comments made by people I meet at talks and workshops in various parts of Singapore – a reflection of the lack of knowledge about Singapore’s biodiversity? Did you know that there are about 3,000 hectares of forests in Singapore and they are important habitats to some families of unique Singaporeans? How many Singaporeans are aware of this fact and why? In this talk, I will try and answer some of these uncertainties concerning Singapore’s biodiversity. You will be introduced to a myriad of unique Singaporeans that you have not met, realised the difficulties they face, understand the solutions and actions that need to be taken.

Mr Roy Tan (Senior Outreach Officer) gives this talk

Time: 2.30-3pm
Venue: National Geographic Store #01-19 VivoCity, 1 HarbourFront Walk, Singapore

16 Jul (Sat): Meet our Forest Friends! with Cicada Tree Eco Place

Walk on The Wild Side! We'll be leading you along the Lower Peirce Trail where certain forest friends live, like the mousedeer, pangolin and colugo. Strange names, right? Come and find out about them! There's more! Our trail is also home to monitor lizards and monkeys. If we're lucky that day (and why shouldn't we be?) we might spot our feathered friends - drongos, babblers, barbets, cuckoos, flowerpeckers, sunbirds, an eagle or two, and we might prick up our ears to hear the regal kingfishers! Our nature guides will be telling us the proper names, and we will learn more about your new friends. Come along! We'll be walking along shady boardwalks, and it will be nice and cool. It will be quite enchanting, as Lower Peirce is tucked away from the noise of the city. This will be a great nature break!

What to Bring: Water in your re-usable water bottle, and herbal insect repellent. Be sure to dress cool in cotton clothing, and bring a hat and a poncho to be prepared for any kind of weather!

Pre-registration and pre-payment is required. To register email Celine Low at contact@cicadatree.org.sg

16 Jul (Sat): National Orchid Garden guided tour

Explore the beauty and diversity of orchids in the National Orchid Garden, Singapore Botanic Gardens.

Since 1859, orchids have been closely associated with the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The products of the Gardens' orchid breeding programme, which began in 1928, deserve a place where they can be displayed in their full splendour. The very design of these orchids is, one could say, 'hand-crafted' by the Gardens' horticultural staff, dedicated to bringing out the finest in any hybrid cross.

Over 1000 species and 2,000 hybrids are now found in the Gardens' collection, with about 600 species and hybrids on display. Every year, more vibrant and enduring hybrids are added on. So that all may admire and enjoy their diversity, richness and beauty, the National Orchid Garden now offers a permanent showcase, the largest display of tropical orchids in the world.

This walk is conducted by the volunteers of the Singapore Botanic Gardens and is held every third Saturday of the month.

Pilot studies by the Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI) in NUS have confirmed that several species of coastal dolphins can be found in Singapore waters, even the rare Finless Porpoise and Dugong. TMSI has launched the Singapore Wild Marine Mammal Survey (SWiMMS), a research project where it wants to establish a volunteer network and sighting reporting system, as well as carry out field studies. Reliable observations from South-east Asia are also welcome, and will help TMSI study whether Singapore contributes to seasonal trans-national migration routes.

12 and 13 Jul (Tue and Wed): FREE screening of “The Cove”

ACRES announces this screening, sponsored by Earth Island Institute. Tickets are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Please RSVP by sending an email to denise@acres.org.sg. Limited seats available!

"The Cove" is a fascinating, internationally-acclaimed documentary exposing the shocking truths about the killings of dolphins and, most importantly, how you can play a part to help them. This Academy Award-winning film follows an elite team of film makers and free divers who go on a covert mission to document the hunt and capture of dolphins in Taiji, Japan. With an estimated 23,000 dolphins and porpoises killed each year, learn the powerful truth behind the source of most of the dolphins in the world’s aquariums and marine parks. Be inspired to make a difference.

In the 1960’s, Richard O’Barry was the world’s leading authority on dolphin training, working on the set of the popular television programme Flipper. Day in and day out, O’Barry kept the dolphins working and television audiences smiling. But one day, that all came to a tragic end. "The Cove", directed by Louie Psihoyos, tells the amazing story of how Psihoyos, O’Barry and an elite team of activists, filmmakers and freedivers embarked on a covert mission to penetrate a hidden cove in Japan, shining light on a dark and deadly secret. The mysteries they covered were only the tip of the iceberg.

9 Jul (Sat): Talk on "The Native Plants of Singapore: Growing Your Natural Heritage" by Prof Hugh Tan

The native plants of any country are indigenous species that naturally occur there and have evolved in that country over thousands or millions of years. Although Singapore has about 2,145 native species of vascular plants consisting of the fern allies, ferns, gymnosperms, and flowering plants, the landscaping in the urban area, such as streets, parks, gardens, and even rooftop gardens, is done mostly using non-native or exotic species, usually from Central or South America, Africa or other parts of Asia. This is a great shame since many Singaporean species are equally, if not more, attractive and suitable for planting in urban conditions. In this talk, the case will be made for “going native” and how to grow native plants. The native plants of Singapore are part of our natural heritage, so we should do our best to propagate, protect and preserve them for posterity.

Hugh T.W. Tan is a Singaporean Associate Professor of Botany at the Department of Biological Sciences, National University, and Deputy Director of the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research. His current areas of research include conservation biology, the horticultural use of native plants of Singapore, and urban agriculture.

The speaker will share with you his discoveries from two years of searching and identification of sponges in Singapore waters.
