24 Apr (Wed): Talk: Why Conservation Matters (Even If Animals Don't Matter to You)

Open to the Public - Registration Needed

Modern medicine has been with us roughly one hundred years, but evolution has been at work since life began 3.5 billion years ago. Every time we lose a species, we lose something that may affect or potentially benefit us. Even if animals and wild spaces don’t appeal to you, their preservation absolutely should. There will be two thrusts in Peter Allison’s talk. Firstly, how you can be a conservationist and have fun at the same time. Secondly, why conservation matters even if you aren’t interested in animals with a focus around discoveries that are still being made about animals that can have medical or material benefits for us. Examples include the incredible work being done on how elephants avoid cancer, a recent discovery based on dragonfly wings that could create natural anti-bacterial wipes and also how butterflies may hold the clue to invisibility. Though modern medicine have been around for about one hundred years, evolution has been at work for millions of years so there is much we can learn from nature. This talk is organised by Nature Society (Singapore) and A2A Safaris.

6 Sep (Thu): Birding in Singapore With Your Eyes Closed...Or How to Listen to Birds

Open to the Public - Registration Needed

In this talk, Yeo Seng Beng reflects on the popularity of birding in Singapore. He feels that bird sounds and calls are an integral part of the birding experience, but this aspect may be under appreciated. Certainly there is much enjoyment in simply listening to birds for the beautiful songs they sing, but isn’t it even better if you can discover a lot more about the bird which is singing? Seng Beng will give examples where the understanding and ability to ID bird sounds provides much advantage to the serious birder.

Seng Beng will briefly explain how birds make their sounds, much louder than expected for their relatively small bodies. He will also touch on using bird sound recording equipment, from the simple to the exorbitant, should anyone be interested in taking up bird sound recording. Modern digital technology allows us to analyse bird sound recordings more easily than ever before, and it is also very easy to share sounds and knowledge because of social media.

Lastly, Seng Beng will talk about the Xeno-Canto bird recording website, where birders from all over the world share bird sound recordings, and he will discuss how Singapore has performed in its recordings and contributions to xeno canto.

10 Mar (Sat): Free talk on Kids well-being and natural curiosity

Do you miss your childhood days playing at the beach? Remember being excited by sea waves and being curious about seashells and tiny sand creatures? Do you recall splashing happily into ponds, wondering about darting dragonflies and stream fishes?
This talk by Cicada Tree Eco Place will help you to heighten your child's natural sense of curiosity about nature and the outdoors. Time in nature is an essential ingredient, not just leisure time. It’s an essential investment in our children’s health.

There is growing evidence that children are increasingly disconnected from the natural world. Research findings indicate children miss opportunities to enhance their health and well-being when they lack direct contact with nature, and to develop responsible long-term environmental behaviour.

The talk is held in conjunction with Sports Hub Community Play Day - "Water Festival 2018". Talk is also held in celebration of Singapore World Water Day (SWWD) 2018 and International Year of The Reef (IYOR) 2018.

Attend the talk and visit our booth to find out more about coastal walks and family nature camps at St John's Island and Pulau Ubin conducted by Cicada Tree Eco-Place (CTEP), an environmental education NGO (Singapore, 2007).
