2 Apr (Sat): Talk on "Dead or Alive Trees?"

With all the lush greenery and colourful flowers around us, it is no wonder that we disregard dead trees and consider them useless and dangerous. However, it is not widely known that dead trees make up a vibrant ecosystem by themselves, supporting a wide range living things like birds, insects and fungi. Dead tree trunks left in any type of habitats, on land or in water, play different roles in enhancing the biodiversity around them. Depending on the durability of the wood, dead tree trunks can persist in the natural landscape for 2 years or even a hundred years. This talk will highlight the importance of dead trees in various aspects of our environment.

More about the speaker: Nanthini Elamgovan is a manager in the Parks Division in National Parks Board. Being positioned in nature parks in Singapore, she spends much time among the flora and fauna which inhabit these parks.
