21 Dec (Sun): Nature-guided Walk for kids at the newly opened Kranji Extension of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve (SBWR)

Join Cicada Tree Eco Place to explore Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve’s new extension was officially opened on 6th December 2014. The Reserve’s visitor centre is now located at Kranji Way road, beside the Kranji Dam. The coastal and forest trails here link up to Buloh’s previous visitor centre which is now called the Wetland Centre. Along the way, two boardwalks with artsy observation pods jut out over the seashore for scenic views of the Straits of Johor and JB city. Here we look for migrant Crested Terns and rare Ospreys perching on the distant kelong poles. If the tide is low we will spot mud critters doing their thing. If it is high then we should encounter silvery schools of Milkfish, Mullet and Needlefish.
If extremely lucky, Pink Dolphins, Dugong and/or Smooth Otters may show up. If not it is still a lovely stroll on the bund through lush mangrove forest. This walk will end at Buloh’s Wetland Centre. We can either walk back to our start point or from outside Buloh take Bus 925 back to the start point or to the MRT/bus interchange. This bus only goes to Buloh's Wetland Centre on Sundays and public holidays. BTW our route is 1.3km per way.

20 Dec (Sat): Birdwatching Stroll for kids at the newly opened Springleaf Nature Park

Join Cicada Tree Eco Place on this walk at Springleaf Nature Park which was officially opened on 1st November 2014. This location was formerly a rural ‘kampong’ area. The village here was known as Chan Chu Kang, sitting on the banks of the Seletar River. In the past, gambier, pepper and rubber were grown here.
With urbanization, the villages disappeared and the green spaces here became nature corridors vitally linked to our precious, biodiverse Central Catchment Nature Reserve. The river and secondary forests and grasslands on the riverbanks are home to many species of native, introduced and migratory birds. More than 80 species have been recorded here. One of the aims of our walk is to add on to the list, new species never before sighted here. In the reed beds, we try to spot waterbirds such as the Yellow Bittern and Black-crowned Night-heron. Up in the Albizia tree canopy perch Dollarbird and Coppersmith Barbet. The many tree holes here attract hole-nesting Lineated Barbet and Asian Glossy Starlings. At dusk, squadrons of very noisy Long-tailed Parakeets dramatically zoom in to roost. Along the way, kids will also learn some of the easier-to-identify bird songs. We will be strolling on the park connector path that runs parallel with Sungei Seletar which ends at Lentor Avenue.

Please note:
  • Bring refillable water bottle, poncho/raincoat/umbrella, hat, snacks, herbal mosquito repellent. Optional items: camera, binoculars, notepad & pen, sunblock, sunglasses.
  • Can wear anything as we will only be on a concrete path. But wear long pants and repellent to minimise mozzie bites.
  • Stroller and wheelchair definitely can do.
  • There are many options for dinner in this area.
To register, please email Celine Low at contact@cicadatree.org.sg giving participants' names, ages and a mobile no.

Time: 4-6pm
Meeting Point: Meet at 3.45pm inside this park’s main entrance building at Upper Thomson Road, opposite junction with Mandai Road.
