Harold Roby Johnson gives this talk. Detailed historical research confirms, beyond reasonable doubt, that Singapore's national flower, Vanda Miss Joaquim, was created by Agnes Joaquim as described by the Gardens' most famous Director and orchid authority Mr Henry Ridley. In the last decades of the 20th century, a number of alternative scenarios for the orchid's origin surfaced and though lacking historic and scientific justification, became widely known. Historian Nadia Wright and orchid enthusiast Harold Johnson reviewed all the views regarding the origin of Vanda Miss Joaquim and have presented their conclusions in the book Vanda Miss Joaquim, Singapore's National Flower and the Legacy of Agnes and Ridley.
