18 Aug (Sat): Herbs & Spices – A Guided Fragrance Walk at Fort Canning Park

Apart from Fort Canning Park being known as the residence of Sir Stamford Raffles, it also has an extensive herb and spice garden, with a wide variety of tropical aromatic plants cultivated. Here grows locally familiar kitchen aromatics such as Pandan, Lemongrass, Curry and Chilli. There are also the spice trees of Cinnamon, Tamarind and Clove. Vanilla, Nutmeg and Assam Gelugor are commonly used spices but are less well-known in their plant form. Neem and Turmeric are still valued for their medicinal qualities, while Aloe Vera and Mint are vital ingredients in the cosmetic and toiletries industries. These are the plants that help shaped our local traditions and culture.
We will walk up the footpaths of the garden to discover many others, to learn to identify them, share recipes that utilise them and about their local traditional uses, and to smell and find out their many other fragrant, beneficial, healing qualities. We will also see and discuss how to easily design, create and maintain your own herb and spice garden of any size.

This walk is best suited for adults. But, if kids are accompanied by an adult, they are welcome to join.
