Southeast Asia (SEA) is a region of stunning biological diversity, hosting some 15% of the earth’s bird species, of which over half are endemic. Unfortunately, bird research in this region is constantly hampered by a lack of interest, poor governmental support and a paucity of local researchers. To date, most studies concentrate on general bird surveys, taxonomy, habitat fragmentation effects, ecology of charismatic bird families (eg hornbills and raptors) and the conservation of flagship species (eg Giant Ibis, Philippine Eagle and the Maleo). Join Ding Li as he gives an overview of ornithological research in SEA for the past three decades, and highlights the major gaps that should be addressed.
In conjunction, the Singapore Bird Group (SBG) will introduce the Small-Grant Scheme for Bird Conservation Studies (SGS-BCS) in Singapore. This pioneering scheme aims to increase bird research in Singapore especially on locally threatened species. Details will be available on the day of the talk.
