This talk will briefly cover the history of ideas on the origins of the Australasian flora, and emerging evidence which appears to support the view that Australia's tropical rainforest flora is largely of ancient Gondwanan heritage but with a significant number of species that are migrants from the Asian region. This tangled tale of ancient origins and modern migrations will be told against the backdrop of the geological evolution of the region, the making and breaking of land connections between drifting crustal fragments.
The talk is by Professor Darren Crayn, who is also one of the notable speakers at the 08th International Flora Malesiana Symposium at the Singapore Botanical Gardens held between 23rd and 27th of August 2010.
All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served after the lecture and admissions is free!
