16 Apr - 15 May: "Spice Frontier - Changing Boundaries, Evolving Uses" an exhibition

Even before the British established Singapore as a trading post in 1819, there were already a small number of gambier plantations on the island. Spice cultivation then expanded as the British actively encouraged the planting of nutmeg while the Chinese independently grew gambier and pepper.

Besides displaying the various uses of spices in our daily lives, this exhibition, researched by the National Archives of Singapore(NAS), documents the rise and fall of spice cultivation in Singapore. Discover also the challenges and difficulties faced by the early planters and how spice plantations have left behind an indelible mark on Singapore’s street names.

In line with this poster exhibition by the NAS, the Library of Botany & Horticulture will also showcase rare books, herbarium specimens as well as fruit-and-seed display related to the theme…Spices.

So come down to the Library and ‘SPICE’ up your life!
